Portable Solar Panels
Have you ever seen an RV, boat, or camper with a solar panel attached? These portable solar panels power their lights,
fridge, and TV or stereo. They are a silent and efficient way to get power away from the
grid.
Portable solar panels can also be very useful for laptops, coffee makers, cell
phones and the like. These days, it doesn't matter if you are a hundred miles from the nearest phone, you can still
log on to your laptop and even conduct business! Your portable solar panel can supply the power, all it needs is
some sunshine!
Portable solar panels vary in size from very small, totally packable panels that
are primarily designed for backpacking, to large enough to power the appliances in an RV.
These are amazing little bundles of technology that enable you to stay powered, if
you really want to. However, when I go backpacking, I prefer to be
unplugged!
On the other hand, imagine if you had an online business to run and you still wanted to backpack in Patagonia or
Rocky Mountain National Park (my old stomping ground). You could get the best of both worlds with portable solar
panels.
Can you make your own portable solar
panel?
Yes, you can; it just takes a couple hundred bucks, a weekend or two, some dedication and a dose of ingenuity.
It is definitely something the average person can do, if they really want to.
There are basically two ways to go about making your own solar panel.
- Buy a kit that has everything you need. Instructions, materials, accessories, etc. Everything is supplied,
not counting your expertise!
- Buy a kit that gives you the necessary information to build your own solar panel, but you procure the
materials.
Both of these approaches have their place. If you have no ability whatsoever in making things and have a lot of
money, buy the first option: the ready make kit.

However, if you are like most people, buy the second kit. You will get everything you need to know, in order to
make your own solar panel. Plus, it will only cost you under $200 to actually do this.
Portable solar panels range in size from the very small backpacking variety, to the large solar panels systems.
They also range a great deal by price. It is surprising how much money you can save by doing it yourself.
